What’s coming up at WHSC in 2022

After hunkering down for a brief hiatus during the winter months, we’re back!

Welcome to Spring 2022 and what we know is going to be a packed and exciting year of events on and off the water at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club. If you’re reading this in your email, please click the link below for news of some of the activities already underway at the club, and a taste for what’s to come over the next few months.

In his letter to members, Commodore Roy Power offered his thanks to everyone who volunteered last year. “On the water we hope to build on the great participation we developed in 2021 with activity for all levels of all ages. Be it in dinghies, cruisers, kayaks or ribs, experienced, or total newbies, we promise to have something to encourage you onto the water. Off the water we hope we can offer a full social programme including the return of barbecues, a la carte, and party nights,” he said.

Bring on Summer ‘22.

It’s Time to Renew Your Membership

With that in mind, it’s time to renew your membership. WHSC Membership Secretary Ronan Brazil has prepared a detailed list of membership options and rates which can be viewed on the website.

There’s an early bird voucher of up to €50 on your membership card if you renew on or before March 31 2022. By taking advantage of this offer, you’ll also be helping the club to repay loans, make necessary repairs, recruit and pay our instructors and house staff in preparation for the season ahead.

To renew membership:

1) Login to the membership portal https://members.whsc.ie/login (primary member for family memberships)

2) Click ‘Renew’ on the menu.

3) Confirm renewal items.

4) An invoice will be generated which you can choose to pay online with ‘GoCardless’, by direct debit, or (this is the preferred method) via bank transfer (**please include name and membership number from invoice in bank transfer details**) or cheque.

Any amendments, changes or problems contact Mike Kelliher (email: whsc.webmaster@gmail.com), or Ronan Brazil (email: whscmembers@gmail.com)

A big thank you to all members who have already paid their 2021 subscriptions.

Laser Training Weekend

The WHSC fleet of Lasers had a record early launch this year, with an inspiring weekend of on- and off-water training during the last weekend in January for Laser sailors of all levels with Tokyo Olympic campaigner Aisling Keller, organised in association with ILCA Ireland.

As sailing watchers will know, Aisling qualified for Ireland in the Laser Radial class, so this was a brilliant opportunity for experienced and newer sailors to learn from one of the very best. Conditions on Saturday were less than ideal, with some very windy conditions, so the focus was on a really informative and thoroughly engrossing classroom session. On Sunday, 11 sailors got out on the water – including, Aisling noted, one keen Topper sailor who got his Dad’s Laser rigged overnight and out on the water.

Many thanks to Aisling Keller for her brilliant coaching, to Laser captain Fiachra Rowan for taking the lead and organising a session that was open to all levels (including Topper sailors!), and Richard Fox and Brian Lynch who volunteered on rescue. And to Brian for remembering to take some pics, even in the choppy conditions.

“We are in the works to organise a coach for regular trainings – it would be rude not to with such an amazing sailing venue and eager sailors. A lovely bunch of sailors to coach and amazing scenery. Dunmore – I’ll be back,” said Aisling on the ILCA Instagram page.

What a brilliant start to the 2022 coaching season — and for those of us who didn’t take part, it was inspiring to see white sails on the horizon again.

Mark your calendars: St Patrick’s Weekend Sail and Fun Run

Due to popular demand, the St. Patrick’s weekend Sail and Fun Run (or Walk) is being re-instated at WHSC and will take place this year on March 19. The tradition is nearly as old as the club and will reunite many of us after the long Covid winter. This will be the first full social event which can take place without (we hope) restrictions, so we’re expecting a fantastic turnout. Funds will be raised in aid of Dunmore East RNLI.

A fun dinghy sailing format will be followed by a group warm-up session and run, walk or stroll on two different courses around the village. All are welcome to join in the fun run. The excursion will end back at the clubhouse for prizes, hot food and refreshments. Further details to follow – watch this space.

Wanted: Senior Instructors for Summer Sailing Courses

Planning is already underway for this summer’s schedule of junior courses. The sailing schedule will be kicking off in the first week of June, with school sailing, and running until mid-August. WHSC is currently recruiting instructors, advanced instructors and a senior instructor. Apply now to whscjo@gmail.com.

Wanted: Oppie instructors and coaches

Last year, the WHSC Optimist fleet went from strength to strength under the enthusiastic and inclusive guidance of Nicola Harris. Now we’re looking for capable instructors/coaches for the Oppie fleet for summer 2022. Interested people should be available from Easter onwards for potential weekend training, and available evening and weekends for the summer. You’ll need powerboat and VHF qualification and be actively involved in sailing/racing. An instructor qualification is not necessary but would be a benefit. If you’re interested, please contact Optimist Captain Nicola Harris via WhatsApp to 087 637 1096.

Regatta fleet Optimist coaching at Easter

Coaching will take place over Easter (April 21 and 22) with Caoimhe Foster, IODAI regatta fleet lead coach. This coaching is for sailors aged 9 yrs+ who completed level 1 or 2 in 2021 and/or those who were club racing in 2021, but didn’t attend IODAI events. This part of the club’s effort and ethos to ensure every sailor gets to achieve their full potential, starting with the youngest, and that no-one is left out.

Coaching is planned separately for the Race squad (see below). The provisional cost (dependant on numbers) will be €60 per sailor. You can signal your interest in the WHSC Optimist WhatsApp group. If you have any questions, please contact Nicola Harris (number above.)

Race fleet Optimist coaching Spring/Summer 2022

Race squad coaching for more experienced sailors will be held with Dylan Reidy in Dunmore on the following dates leading up to the summer:

April 16th & 17th
May 14th & 15th
June 4th & 5th
July 16th & 17th

Cost per weekend €60 (this is totally number dependant). These dates are as confirmed as they can be at this stage. If there are any changes, Nicola will advise as soon as she knows.
Further questions to Nicola please (see number above.)

Topper News

Our Topper class is growing and is also looking for coaches and volunteers.

Topper Captain Nathalie McConnell is hoping to start coaching sessions before the first Traveller one-day event away in Lough Derg on April 10. This will be a great opportunity to try out racing outside our own club. We’ll keep you posted with more details on when coaching in advance of this event will begin.

A group of over twelve WHSC Topper sailors have already been out on the water in training for the Topper Worlds in Lake Garda in July.

Welcome Sean Morton, our new Club Manager

A big welcome back to Sean Morton, who started this week as full-time Club Manager. Sean will assist all committee members to enhance the experience and engagement members have on a day-to-day basis with the club. We know you will join us in welcoming Sean and support him in his new role.

Powerboat training

Gary Curran has been involved with running a schedule of powerboat training courses with WHSC in Dunmore East for the last 4 years and hopes to be able to set up a schedule of online theory and on-water practical courses to run during the 2022 season.

Each course comprises three days’ training for powerboat certification. There is still some availability on an online training course taking place next Sunday, February 6, from 9.30am to 5pm. The total cost for the training is €400.

He would like to put together a contact list of interested people. Please contact him on on 086 2623727 or email info@southcoastsailing.net or curranclan@live.ie if you wish to be included for the 2022 season.
