WHSC sailors take home a haul of prizes from Topper Autumn Traveller event at Malahide Yacht Club

Fourteen sailors from the WHSC Topper fleet invaded Malahide on Sunday September 26 2021 for a one-day Traveller event. There had been very poor weather forecast, including high winds, but the day brought blue skies and some strong gusts. They departed Waterford at 7am to be rigged and ready for a 10.45am briefing.

The 4.2 fleet saw a great tussle between Christopher Plant and Ronan Quinlan, who between them won all 4 races. Christopher came first overall with a better placing. Meena Sweetman and Grainne Byrne also competed in the 4.2.

The 5.3 fleet saw Max Passberger claim the title with four wins, followed closely by Eoin Byrne (3rd overall), Fionn Lynch (5th overall), Peter Doyle (6th), Julia McConnell (7th), Matthew Plant (8th), Sarah Clooney (9th), Max Sweetman (11th), Isabelle Passberger (15th), Eimear Quinlan (16th).

The junior winners were Julia McConnell (2nd junior female) and Eoin Byrne (2nd junior male), followed by Peter Doyle in 3rd place.

In the youth male fleet, Max Passberger placed first, Fionn Lynch was 2nd and Matthew Plant 3rd. Sarah Clooney was 1st female in the youth fleet, followed by Isabelle Passberger in second position.

Thanks to Barry McConnell for a brilliant season’s coaching and encouragement, and to all the parent volunteers who got out of their beds early on Sunday morning to make it possible. And thanks to Fiona Passberger for a thorough match result.
