Dunmore East RNLI is hosting a Blessing of the Boats Ceremony in Dunmore East harbour, under the lighthouse, on Sunday 25 August at 2.30 pm.
At 2.30 pm the Dunmore East RNLI lifeboat will position in the harbour under the lighthouse, all seagoing vessels are welcome to come alongside the lifeboat for the ceremony. The blessing of the boats will be concluded with songs by Margaret Brooks and Richie Roberts which will include the lifeboat song. The flotilla of boats will then head to sea, just outside the harbour wall where the Dunmore East lifeboat crew will lay a wreath to remember those lost at sea.
On return to the harbour, the lifeboat station house will be open to the public. The crew and management of Dunmore East RNLI would invite everyone to come and join them for light refreshments. The lifeboat shop, located at the station, will be open all day also.
Commenting on the event Volunteer Lifeboat Chairman Eddie Stewart Liberty said ‘It has been a great tradition here in Dunmore East for many years and this year, in particular, we remember the Fastnet race tragedy from 40 years ago. Dunmore East lifeboat was one of 13 RNLI lifeboats involved and our volunteers spent 15 hours at sea rescuing three yachts.
It is always lovely to see all the dressed boats and yachts come alongside the lifeboat in the harbour for the blessing and watch the flotilla go to sea for the wreath-laying. It is a day of remembrance and we would welcome all boats and yachts to join us on the day’
