Congratulations to WHSC Sailors

A big congratulations to WHSC sailors Douglas Elmes, who won the IODAI national trials and will go on to represent Ireland at the worlds in the Dominican Republic, and to Ciaran Finnegan who will go to the European Championships in Brittany. An outstanding achievement for both sailors.

Optimist Trials May Bank Holiday Weekend

Sixty Optimist sailors will be in Dunmore East vying for places on the Irish team. WHSC are looking forward to making this a special event for them.

We have arranged a unique evening on Saturday with Paella from Azzurro to persuade sailors and parents to use the club and bar as much as possible.

On Sunday members are welcome to join us for a barbeque on the deck and meet our visitors.

We look forward to members assisting us by sparing a few hours during the weekend.

Barry O’Connor 086 3547 341 would welcome assistance launching and recovering boats, usually about 10:30am and 3-4pm.

Bob Tait is organising the dinghy parking to ensure boats and sailors are safe and ready to launch.

David Marchant 087 2537 092 and our new bar manager Dermot Barrett would welcome help preparing lunches, and distributing soup to cold sailors as they return off the water.

Bill McConnell 087 2647 877 is co-ordinating Committee boats and would welcome volunteers to assist in manning them.

We have already had a great commitment from owners of RIBs for which we are very grateful.

Wanted: Spare Optimist Parts

This year, we’re hoping to run a Taste of Sailing course for our younger members. Many of who will be completely new to sailing, and even the club. The club has a few optimist dinghys that just need some TLC to get them back in the water. If you have any old oppy parts lying around the shed at home we’d be happy to take them off your hands.

Maybe you even have an old oppy that’s in need of repair. We can fix it up!

Sail Spree

WHSC is proud to be part of the ISA’s Sail Spree initiative….

Launched by the Irish Sailing Association in 2012 to encourage people of all ages to get together in their local community and discover the thrill of either sailing, windsurfing, powerboating or jet skiing.

The event will take place nationwide over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of June where clubs and training centres around the country will open their doors for two days of watersports, games, activities, music, entertainment, food and drink. Sail Spree is perfect for all ages from young children and teenagers to adults and families.

Dinghy Racing Report

The new season has witnessed something of a renaissance in the dinghy fleet. It has been great to see the likes of Mike Murphy, Rob McConnell and Stuart Harris back racing 420’s at the club. Exciting too is the reappearance of Flying Fifteens with Dave Marchant and Finbar Cowman bringing their boats along this weekend.

Day three of the spring series got underway in moderate north easterly winds meaning flat water but shifty conditions. Graham Curran and Neil Dunne suffered gear failure before the start and had to sail in, leaving just Charlie Boland / Rob McConnell and Andrew Paul / Stuart Harris hoping to end Barry McConnell / James Doolin’s unbeaten run in the 420’s. Kirsten MacDermot was there in her 4.7 (it would be great to see more Lasers on the water) and Dave Marchant and Finbar Cowman braced themselves for a baptism of fire in the Fifteen.

Barry McConnell took the first race of the day with Charlie 2^nd, Andrew 3^rd, Kirsten 4^th and Dave 5^th.

The shifty conditions made for interesting sailing however and the club champion was finally knocked off his perch in Race 2 when Andy overtook him on the last beat. Well done Andy!

South East Inter-School Sailing Event 2012

Notice of Race

The South East Inter-Schools 2012 will be held at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club on Friday 27^th April (Check in 09.30 / Briefing 10.00 / First Gun 11.00)

This will be a one day mixed fleet event of 3 races sailed under PY Handicap. One discard will apply. Racing will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

Schools may enter any number of teams, each team consisting of 3 boats. Single-handed and two-handed boats are permitted. Boats will be handicapped under Portsmouth Yardstick. The combined score of the first two boats on each team will count in each race.

The South Eastern Inter-Schools Trophy will be awarded to the team with the best overall combined score.

An individual prize will be given to the top boat on the day also.

It is a condition of entry that every entrant must be currently attending the school represented and that all boats entered are insured by their owners for Third Party liability of at least €1,000,000.

A safety check will take place before launch. A floating painter, bailer, praddle and all bungs must be in place.

Entry Fee: €60 per team
