Neither Ollie and Mary had sailed before, so they were delighted at the opportunity to try their hands at the sport. They were brought out on a Cruiser and a Wayfarer respectively and had a lot of fun…
Lucky for us, the strong northwesterly which blew all day calmed in the evening and we had very pleasant sailing conditions.
All ages turned up and 22 people set out to sea in cruisers , Wayfarers and Oppies. It was a pleasure seeing our new instructors at work with the very young ones on their first day of work. The smiles on the children said it all.
Some of our bigger guests went on the Wayfarers helmed by Kevin Brennan and Douglas Elmes. Bill McConnell and Dave Marchant tested some new sailors that could come in handy for crewing this season. Many were put through their paces and asked to perform all kind of jobs on the cruisers.
This Tenner Tuesday series has been supported by WLRFM with an advertising campaign which you have possibly heard on the air and with a Facebook campaign under the expert control of our own PR expert Nuala Brown Treacy.
Next week special guests Ollie Carrol and Mary O’Neill from the big Breakfast Bla will be Joining us to report on our Try Sailing / Tenner Tuesday !
We’re looking forward to seeing you there too !
Reminder ‘Try Sailing Tuesday’ is this evening at 19:00. We’re looking forward to a pleasant evening out on the water.
Weather is looking good, North Westerly blowing but Dunmore East is nicely sheltered. Forecast is for winds to lighten slightly in the evening.
For new visitors we extend a warm welcome, we’re looking forward to meeting you. Make way to the WHSC clubhouse for registration. The bar will be open this evening, you are invited to bring spectators to enjoy the view from the comfort of the lounge and terrace.
More information on Try Sailing Tuesdays Here
We have slowly been ramping up at WHSC towards the new season, at this point in time a lot of the cruisers have launched; they will start racing in earnest shortly. Our development squad has been on the water for 5 weeks with noticeable improvements in sailing skills and this week our Laser group will go on the water. We can’t wait for our bank holiday and hope weather will be good.
To run the club and have all sailing, hospitality, changing facilities in place costs a lot of money and to help with this we hope you will re-join / join us this year to help spread the costs over as many people as possible.
As you know we reduced membership fees by € 100,- to encourage people to be part of our club and make it affordable for as many as possible.
This year there is a lot in place for your enjoyment which will make your membership worthwhile. Rib trips, Saltees Trip, Dinghy and cruiser racing , Sea Legs, Sailing courses ,adult courses and more.
We hope you will re-join / join as soon as possible to get us off on a good start for 2017
With kind Regards
How it works – Every Tuesday evening in June the club will be open to anyone wishing to try cruising, dinghy sailing or power boating. All they have to do is turn up with €10 in their pocket.
This year the club committee have been working very hard to get more sailors on the water. Growing the membership benefits everyone; we broaden the sailing window with more eyes on the water and race days become more exciting. In short the club becomes a more vibrant place to sail and socialise.
As part of this effort to grow the club we are running ‘Try Sailing Tuesdays’ for the month of June. The ‘Try Sailing’ initiative was conceived by the ISA to bring new sailors to the sport and has been working successfully for other clubs.
We expect a good turnout every Tuesday, the club have been busy distributing flyers and WLR have kindly sponsored radio advertising to broadcast our message. If you have friends or work colleagues who you think would enjoy sailing then we encourage you to spread the word!
We do need your help – As you can imagine a lot of effort goes into making this happen. We need all hands on deck and the slip ! We hope members will embrace this opportunity to take their boat out and fill the bay with sails every Tuesday evening, but also help where possible. If you have free time on Tuesday evenings and can take some crew or help in any other way please contact Rene on 087-2199570
