40 years on from the famous rescue in the Fastnet Race, Mathew Power returned to Dunmore East with his family.
From Left to right John Walsh (RNLI), John Murphy (RNLI) Matthew Power (Rescued from Yacht Autonomous) Patrick Glody (RNLI) and Joseph Murphy (RNLI)
Mathew returned to Dunmore East with his family for the first time after 40 years since being rescued by this crew who went out to sea when they were called for, in one of the most horrendous seas encountered of the Irish coast.
Waterford Harbour Sailing Club during that night opened its doors, looked after many sailors by feeding them , supplying dry clothes and putting them up in their homes. WHSC is well remembered by many sailors from this event.
A great evening was had by all and some interesting stories were told !!
if you are interested in the course, please contact Nicholas Walsh at firstname.lastname@example.org or 086 256 9636.
ABOUT VHF COURSE
A course for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment.
The aim of the course, is to provide trainees understanding (practical and theoretical) of VHF communication at sea. The course includes training, preparation and examination for VHF radio license, required by the Irish Government.
All skippers and power-boat/rescue-boat skippers must be licensed radio-operators. Crews on yachts and rescue craft are encouraged to learn and become licensed operators also. A VHF license is highly recommended pre-requisite for ISA ‘Safety Boat’ candidates.
Successful attainment of a licence and associated personal identity radio codes from the Department will allow the holder to fully benefit from DSC emergency functions of his / her modern VHF radio or EPIRB in sending pre-defined digital distress messages.
Venue: WHSC Club house.
Equipment: VHF handsets are provided but if you have your own set please bring it along.
Cost: 220 EUR/per person (incl. tuition, oral and written examination, Irish Government VHF License and DSC codes)
If you have not applied your boat sticker yet, you are reminded to collect it from the bar and apply it to your boat as soon as possible.
An inventory of boats will soon take place and it’s helpful if stickers are correctly applied. If you are away or unavailable please contact Andrea and we will assist you in applying the sticker.
If you have paid for dinghy parking and do not have a sticker there may have been a problem with the paperwork received. Please contact Andrea as soon as possible to get this resolved.
We would also like to remind you that ALL dinghies parked at the club MUST display a 2019 boat sticker. Dinghies left parked without a sticker will have 2019 fees applied.
An important reminder that with the original debentures from 10 years ago there is NO free boat parking any longer. (Unfortunately a number of forms went out erroneously stating there was free parking; Apologies for this).
Any questions reference boat stickers etc please contact andrea via E-mail : email@example.com
Thanks to all members for their continued support in managing our boat inventory.
To commemorate their rescue and say thanks to all the people of Dunmore East who assisted Mathew Power of the yacht “Autonomy” will be on Thursday night in Waterford Harbour Sailing Club.
Mathew and his sister Frances are survivors of the 1979 Fastnet Yacht Race. Their yacht Autonomy was towed into Dunmore East by the Dunmore East lifeboat in company with another yacht called Locomotion.
Mathew says “We were all very grateful indeed to the Coxswain and crew of the Dunmore East Lifeboat for assisting us after the horrific disaster. We would also like to express our thanks to all the inhabitants of Dunmore East and members of the Waterford Sailing Club who turned out in the middle of the night to give us accommodation and much needed Guinness and refreshments. It is something neither my sister and I will ever forget”.
It is now 40 years on and Mathew has returned to Dunmore East with his wife and son and would like to pay their respects to the Coxswain and crew of the RNLI who rescued them . In addition they would like to visit and personally thank the family who looked after us throughout our stay in Dunmore East.
Mathew can’t remember the name of the family who he stayed with; he would be very grateful for any information anybody may have !
Mathew will be in the clubhouse on Thursday at 21.00 hours after cruiser racing. I am sure he can tell a tale or two of this eventful night. All the lifeboat crew on board the lifeboat during this night will be joining us
